I don't know why, it's just sort of happened. But what I've been finding from all my reading is that there is a lot of sexism, or "transphobia" that shouldn't be tolerated. Some would say that I'm biased because I'm a member of the gay community, and I don't really think that's fair. I don't personally know any transgendered people, so I can't say how they feel or what they go through. But I do see it.

At the place I work, we have a lot of transwomen shoppers, who I only notice when I work in the fitting room. If they ever come in at a busy time, and there are other customers around, especially women, there is a definite tension. All of the attention goes on this poor person, who just wants to try on a pair of jeans. I can feel negative glares towards whoever the transwoman is. But I always notice that they're tough and still walk through with their head high. It's so unfair. Is it really such a crime that this person chose to become a woman?

I remember one time, a co-worker who also worked in the fitting room, told me about a transwoman customer that came to her (as if it were worth reporting), and her exact words were "I tried so hard not to laugh." What were trying not to laugh at? All I said was "That's not funny," and we left it. If this poor girl is going to be stuck in her transphobic bubble, so be it. I hope she learns her lesson the hard way.

I think the best societal view shines through in the South Park episode "Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina." While this is actually one of my favourite South Park episodes, because the concept of Mr. Garrison going through a sex change is actually comical (because his perception of what it means to be a woman is quite sexist), there is something askew about the whole episode. I know South Park has always been a source of controversy, but message is somewhat offensive. In the episode, people are inspired by Mr. Garrsion to change their identities as well. One Jewish boy transforms himself into an African-American, and his father surgically transforms into a dolphin. Basically the message is that we shouldn't just change our bodies because we "feel" a certain way, we should just leave it as nature intended.

I find it difficult to see what is so wrong about that. If someone is overweight and it makes them "feel" bad, do they not have the right to lose weight? If someone is born disfigured, do they not have the right to corrective surgery? You might be saying "yeah, but that's different," but it's not. Someone being born disfigured is still nature, and to correct it surgically is not. It's the same with transgendered people. It may not be what nature intended, but it makes them "feel" better. The alternative is feeling awful and depression. I don't think that's a fair option.

All I'm saying is, when it comes to transgendered people, leave them alone. They want to be treated like everyone else. You don't have to agree with their choice. You have probably made some choices yourself that others wouldn't agree with. Like that baby you aborted in college and sleeping with your girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. I'm not speaking on the behalf of transgendered people, but as an observer, enough is enough.

Leave YouTube Alone!

An open letter to "Ms" Chris Crocker:

Hello, Chris. How are you? That's good. Your new weave looks nice. I previewed your song "Mind in the Gutter" (because, despite your protest, I can not afford the 99 cents) on iTunes and I must admit, it is decently catchy. You're just brimming with talent, both musically and with words. Who else would be able to write "I've got you thinking all them bad things/I've got you reaching for them body parts", and "Chris Crocker's on the loose - Are you scared yet?". No one. And yes, I am quite scared that you're on the loose. Scared at the fact that you're officially, (then awkwardly gone back on that statement) severing your ties with YouTube.

Look Chris, I love you dearly. You're ever so crazy. Every time I do something regrettable under the influence, I just remember that you do even worse and regrettable things in sobriety. Such as yelling at your grandmother for all of the internet to see, mowing down on cheeseburgers outside an adult movie theatre, and paying homage to the one and only by flashing your girly bits. Whatever I do, you have done much, much worse, and I look like a gay Mother Teresa in comparison. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you're constantly hammered or snort more blow than LiLo. The snorting of blow would be the only explanation as to why you would slowly start to abandon your YouTube account because you've developed some sort of conspiracy that they're trying to shut you down. They're not. You bring them millions of views. And as much as you are a memorable and entertaining member of the YouTube community, contrary to your claims, you are not YouTube. You claiming to be YouTube is like Jessica Simpson claiming to be country music. You're both blonde and slightly off your rocker, and you both cling to what's left of your fame like it's your last overpriced hair extension.

But here's the thing, while you do have a decently sized fan base (most of whom, I must say, are laughing at, not with), they're only supporters because you happen to be where they already are. You have all those subscribers and hits because YouTube is so convenient. I mean, I will go to your website because despite my better judgement I can't resist you and your shenanigans. But most savvy YouTubers won't. Because we're all lazy, and we won't type "http://mschriscrocker.com" into our browers. And while you think you're going to create some sort of internet mass exodus, quite the opposite is going to happen. You'll stop posting videos, people will forget about you, and in 20 years you'll be a featured in a question in "Trival Pursuit: The 2000's Edition". I love you Chris, and I will always cherish your ambiguity and raunch, but there are more ambigious and raunchier people out there. Like Clay Aiken. Your fifteen minutes are way past expired, admit it. But then again, accepting reality and doing what everyone wants is quite the opposite of everything you are. To quote a memorable Lizzy McGuire episode (even though you're making a huge mistake), I leave you with "You rock, don't ever change."

Love,

Your "fans"

He's got a face for radio

As I was innocently wandering across the landscape that is Facebook, a horrorible atrocity bombarded my eyes and caused my heart to stop. There have been many tragedies that I found difficult to deal with in the entertainment world; Britney's 2007 VMA performance, Jennifer Hudson's Oscar dress, Kim Kardashian. This however, is beyond words. My friends, I was informed, nay told, to listen to Perez Hilton's bi-weekly radio show.

Seriously? A radio show? I can barely stand reading what this man has to say, let alone actually hearing it coming from his mouth. This man is a fat sack of Hollywood nothing with bad hair. And I know there are a lot of you (A LOT), who love Perez and give him way more hits than he ever deserves, but I can not justify this man's success. Drawing penis' and blow on celebrities through Paint is not blogging. It is not celebrity news. It's not even low-brow art you find on Deviant Art. I think Perez Hilton is the perfect pen name for him because it demonstrates that he contributes just as much to society as the heiress who's name he cleverly parodied. Actually, I think that is probably his most credible accomplishment.

And after researching that people would be subjecting their ears to his obnoxious ramblings about people who are prettier than he is, I learned that this has been going on since MAY. With him on the radio Howard Stern is fucking Anderson Cooper. I know Perez has a giant following, but seriously, stop clicking on that shit, and please touch that dial. Perez Hilton is about as useful as teen pregnancy.

The 80's are here to stay (whether you like it or not) OR: The Second Coming

Welcome, etc. I'm not going to start of this blog by giving you my life's story, so here we go.

This May, many of us were blessed with the good fortune of the Sex and the City movie, which was a decadent slice of visual cheesecake. The clothes in that film were fantastic, and deliciously 80's. I have a weakness for any garment that is sparkly, or simply over-the-top. So needless to say the costumes in that movie made me moan (literally...I think I made those around me uneasy). But what the film confirmed for me is something that I had been predicting/hoping for a while: The Glorious Return of Shoulder Pads. So as New York Fashion Week for Spring 2009 is on a roll, I'm seeing everything I've been hoping for and more.

For a while, and still, the 80's were back in a really young and trendy way. Leggings, big hair, off the shoulder...basically anything you would wear as Madonna circa "Like a Virgin" for Halloween. But now the 80's has returned in a more mature and sophisticated manner. Like what our mother's wore 25 years ago, but slightly edgier and more feminine. On the right you see an ensemble for Marc Jacobs. The look has a bourgeosie New Yorker vibe to it. There's shoulder pads in the sweater and the skirt is also pleated. Jacobs has managed to bring back what is typically remembered as a rather masculine look, and made it soft again. I think the part of the reason shoulder pads went out in the first place is just that they got so tired. A woman couldn't buy any jacket or blouse without them. But like after Barbra's long break after forgetting her words, they're back, they're fresh, and they're fun again.

Here are a few samples from Proenza Schouler (which if you take a look at Style.com, you'll see the show shoves the aesthetic down your throat [which is where I stole the photos from]). The 80's are here to stay. Just like Global Warming and that case of herpes you caught last week, the 80's are bigger and hotter than ever.
